Some girls have not had a period in months or years, when should they start birth control?

My girlfriend wants to start soon, but she has not has her period in quite some time. This is not only her, but a few of her friends (not close-close friends) have the same issue. Can she just start taking it when she wants?
Answer:
There are many reasons for irregular periods, or total amenorhrea (not getting it at all). Sometimes it is just fairly normal variations between one woman and another, but lack of menstruation can also be a symptom of an underlying problem which needs treatment.
This should be evaluated, to rule out conditions that could be potentially harmful.

You can not assume that she is infertile. She could still ovulate, even without regular periods. Ovulation always comes first, then the bleeding about 2 weeks later, so you never know when that could happen.

Anyone who is sexually active should be using some time of birth control unless you are planning to be pregnant.

My sister-in-law: no period for several years . . . needed fertility drugs to get pregnant twice . . . then BAM all of a sudden pregnant 13 years later at the age of 40. THIS REALLY DOES HAPPEN!!

Use protection, NOW.

Additional Info -- OH, OKAY!
No, she does not need to wait for her period. There are two reasons for starting with the period. First -- to be sure she isn't pregnant, which in this case isn't necessary. And second -- so that it won't disrupt the cycle, which doesn't apply since she is already irregular.
She can start anytime.
she has to see a doctor and she needs to discuss this, most likely shes starving herself which is popular these days and that will stop the mensus because she hasnt the extra blood to lose. shes slowly killing herself if thats the case.
well she needs to go see the doctor immediately. Its most likely she is preganet
no she shouldn't start until she goes to a gynecologist to find out why she hasn't had a period, if it hasn't been a long time since she first started its normal to miss a period or be off schedule, being althetic, stress or hormone balances are a few reasons especially if she's young- birth control like the pill or ring is used on a schedule with the cycle (like sunday after the period ends)..if she's had a period already she can still get pregnant at any time-- a doctor can see whats going on if she lets them know everything about her lifestyle and find whats the best kind pills or whatever type she wants to use for her
